Education and Training

The University of Pittsburgh Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism offers a comprehensive training environment for physicians and investigators seeking careers as clinicians, clinician-educators, and researchers. Our ACGME-accredited fellowship is one of the largest in the country and provides an extensive inpatient and outpatient experience across UPMC Presbyterian, Magee Women’s Hospital, Shadyside, Children’s Hospital, and the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, emphasizing longitudinal patient care and sub-specialty case management. Fellows also participate in a rich array of didactic sessions, conferences, and seminars during their fellowship. The standard two-year clinical track can be extended for an additional one or two years of intensive mentored research, enabling trainees to combine clinical expertise with academic investigation. For those interested in obesity medicine, the Division offers an Obesity Medicine fellowship, providing concentrated outpatient experience, interdisciplinary care exposure, and preparation for board certification.

Research-focused training is further strengthened by our NIH-funded T32 Training Program in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism, one of the nation’s longest-running postdoctoral programs, as well as complementary programs such as the Physician Scientist Incubator, which supports MD trainees pursuing pre-clinical research careers.

Together, these pathways create a dynamic, flexible, and highly supportive training ecosystem that prepares clinicians to excel in patient care, research, education, and academic leadership.

Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism Fellowship Program

Our Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism fellowship provides comprehensive clinical and research training, preparing physicians to become leaders in academic medicine. Our mission is to train the next generation of physician-scientists, clinician-educators, and expert clinicians.

Obesity Medicine Fellowship Program

Our Obesity Medicine Fellowship provides comprehensive clinical, educational, and research training to prepare physicians for careers as expert clinicians, educational leaders, and investigators in obesity and related metabolic disorders.

Endocrine and Metabolism Research Training

The Division offers comprehensive research training across basic, translational, clinical, and population health disciplines, providing trainees with the mentorship, skills, and resources needed to become independent investigators and physician-scientists.

Advanced Practice Provider Fellowship Program

Our Adult Endocrinology Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Fellowship program provides comprehensive clinical training to prepare APPs for a career in the management of patients with endocrine disorders in the outpatient and inpatient setting. Our fellows are employed within our division and paid during the training period. Once they have completed their fellowship, our APP fellows are prepared to provide autonomous comprehensive endocrine care within the scope of their license and in collaboration with supervising physicians.
