About
With a rich history, spanning more than half of a century, the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at the University of Pittsburgh is one of the largest divisions in the country and a leader in conducting groundbreaking research and providing outstanding, expert-led clinical care. Our faculty lead innovative investigations supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the American Diabetes Association (ADA), and industry partners, spanning diabetes, pituitary disorders, adrenal disease, obesity, thyroid disease, osteoporosis, as well as more rare endocrine disorders. Interdisciplinary collaboration is central to our mission, with strong partnerships across UPMC and the University’s health sciences community. The Division also supports one of the nation’s premier Endocrinology and Metabolism fellowship programs, including a research fellowship funded by an NIH training grant.
Our clinicians deliver expert, compassionate care at UPMC Presbyterian/Shadyside, Magee-Womens Hospital, the Veterans Affairs Pittsburgh Healthcare System, and multiple outpatient locations, including the Falk Endocrinology Clinic on the UPMC Presbyterian campus. As the demand for endocrine services grows, we continue to expand access across western Pennsylvania through new community sites and telemedicine programs that connect patients in rural areas to leading specialists.
Our faculty consistently exceed national standards set by the Endocrine Society and ADA, leading system-wide initiatives to improve diabetes outcomes and population health. These include inpatient glycemic management programs, one of the nation’s largest ADA-recognized diabetes education networks, and a registry of more than 185,000 patients to support personalized, data-driven care. With a commitment to innovation, collaboration, and accessibility, the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism provides comprehensive, high-quality care that empowers patients at every stage of their endocrine health journey.
In addition, we are home to a Pituitary Center of Excellence and lead a world-renowned multidisciplinary program focused on the diagnosis and management of patients with Cushing’s, acromegaly, hyperprolactinemia, hypopituitarism and other pituitary disorders. Our outstanding multidisciplinary adrenal center is one of the highest volume centers in the country and faculty from University of Pittsburgh/UPMC have led the development of clinical guidelines for the management of patients with adrenal disease.
Our multidisciplinary Thyroid Program is one of the leading programs in the nation. We are one of the only academic centers in the nation to offer radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for the treatment of thyroid nodules and faculty from the University of Pittsburgh/UPMC developed and pioneered the use of molecular testing for the evaluation of thyroid nodules.
