Geriatric Medicine Fellowship Program

Testimonials

Leslie Scheunemann, MD, MPH

Steven Handler, MD, PhD

A big thing that set this program apart from others is how much time we spend at our nursing homes. I specifically wanted a program that was more focused on the long-term care community. For someone who wants to do long-term care, that’s the experience that I need. I think getting that experience is unique because you meet a lot of patients, families, and staff, and you learn a lot about the ins and outs of what different facilities can offer. The program here did a really good job of standing out with the diversity of rotations, especially the nursing home rotations.

The faculty here outstanding. They are super nice, and very patient with me. Especially as an international graduate studying here, there’s been a lot of things I’ve had to learn here. They have been very helpful and supportive to me during this transition and my learning. I appreciate that. Faculty and staff do their best to tailor to your learning needs. You will not regret coming here to learn!

What’s unique here is the diversity of interests with each of the faculty. Regardless of what you’re interested in within geriatrics, there’s going to be someone that you can talk to that can be your mentor who’s just as excited, if not more excited, about a specific area. Plus, having all the resources within UPMC and within Pitt. There’s just an abundance of resources that you don’t necessarily get anywhere else.
