Osteoporosis Prevention and Treatment Center

The Osteoporosis Prevention and Treatment Center is dedicated to advancing the understanding of bone health, skeletal metabolism, and fracture prevention in older adults through cutting-edge clinical research, multidisciplinary collaboration, and evidence-based patient care.
Research

  • NIH-funded studies focused on the prevention, diagnosis, and management of osteoporosis and related metabolic bone disorders in aging populations.
  • Utilization of a Hologic Horizon® densitometer with fan-beam technology, Instant Vertebral Assessment®, and the Trabecular Bone Score® program, providing state-of-the-art DXA-based analysis of bone mineral density and body composition. Advanced software enables precise measurement and longitudinal monitoring across research protocols.
Clinical Care

  • Patients at the UPMC Center for Osteoporosis and Metabolic Bone Disease, located in the Benedum Clinic at Montefiore Hospital, benefit from comprehensive diagnostic evaluations with the Hologic Horizon® densitometer and personalized treatment plans aimed at improving bone health and reducing fracture risk.
  • The Bone Health Bus, our mobile laboratory unit, expands access to care for homebound participants and individuals with frailty in the community and in long-term care settings. The mobile unit is fully equipped with DXA scanning, vertebral fracture assessment, trabecular bone assessment, ultrasound-based muscle evaluation, and facilities for phlebotomy and on-site sample processing.
This innovative platform, developed in partnership with the Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center, extends clinical care and research participation to traditionally underserved populations and helps address gaps in osteoporosis care within our community.

Through its integrated clinical and research missions, the Osteoporosis Prevention and Treatment Center serves as a leading national resource for advancing bone health and promoting independence among older adults.
