Obesity Medicine Fellowship Program

Program Overview

The Obesity Medicine Fellowship is designed to provide comprehensive subspecialty training in the full spectrum of diseases that cause, result from, or are influenced by obesity, along with expertise in the treatment of obesity itself. The program is intended for physicians who are board-certified or eligible in Internal Medicine and seek advanced preparation in this evolving field. Through a combination of inpatient and outpatient experiences, didactic sessions, and case-based learning, fellows develop proficiency in the evaluation, management, and long-term care of patients with obesity and related metabolic disorders. Humanistic, ethical, and patient-centered care principles are emphasized throughout training.

Structure of the Fellowship

The program currently accepts one fellow per year for a one-year clinical fellowship, with the option to extend training for an additional one to two years for advanced research. The extended track is ideal for physicians pursuing academic careers that integrate patient care with clinical or basic-science investigation. All fellows – regardless of track – engage in a mentored research or quality improvement project during their training, gaining skills in study design, data interpretation, and scholarly communication.

Evaluation of Fellows

Fellow progress is assessed through multiple measures, including attending evaluations of clinical performance, research mentor feedback, and portfolio review. These evaluations ensure that each fellow achieves the competencies required for independent practice and academic advancement. Program quality is reviewed semiannually during Curriculum Committee meetings, attended by fellows and faculty, with a formal Annual Program Evaluation conducted each year. Feedback from these reviews directly informs continuous program improvement.
