Obesity Medicine Fellowship Program

Research Training

The Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism offers a robust clinical and basic research environment. Fellows are encouraged during the first two months to select a research mentor in an area of mutual interest and to design a clinical or basic research project under their guidance. Trainees carry out the project under faculty supervision during the first year, with the option to continue in subsequent years for those pursuing the research track. All fellows are expected to present their work at national scientific meetings and contribute to manuscripts submitted to peer-reviewed journals when results merit publication.

Research progress is closely monitored. The Program Director reviews each project for feasibility and scientific merit at the outset and provides guidance throughout the process. Fellows submit a written research proposal by the end of August in their first year, and mentors provide semi-annual electronic evaluations of performance. Publication of results and presentation at national meetings serve as key indicators of success.

T32 Research Training in Diabetes and Endocrinology

The T32 Research Training in Diabetes and Endocrinology Program, funded by the NIDDK, offers postdoctoral fellows interdisciplinary research opportunities across multiple departments at the University of Pittsburgh. Participants benefit from exceptional mentorship, tailored career development plans, and structured oversight to ensure ongoing progress. While the T32 award is limited to U.S. citizens and permanent residents, alternative funding arrangements are available for international graduates seeking to extend their fellowship for research training.

Quality Improvement Project

In addition, all fellows participate in a Quality Improvement (QI) project aimed at enhancing clinical care or outcomes. This project may complement or be separate from their primary research, providing an applied perspective on improving patient care while developing essential skills in clinical investigation and process improvement.
