Obesity Medicine Fellowship Program

Clinical Training

Fellows gain diverse inpatient experience through rotations on the bariatric surgery service at UPMC Magee Women’s Hospital in Oakland and the GI/nutrition and total parenteral nutrition (TPN) service at UPMC Presbyterian and Montefiore Hospitals. These rotations expose trainees to the multidisciplinary management of complex patients with obesity and related comorbidities, providing an in-depth understanding of perioperative care, nutritional optimization, and medical complications of obesity.

Outpatient training forms the core of the fellowship experience. Fellows spend most of their ambulatory time in the Center for Obesity Medicine clinics in Oakland, working alongside Internal Medicine, Endocrinology, and Gastroenterology faculty who are diplomates of the American Board of Obesity Medicine (ABOM). Additional rotations offer broad exposure to obesity care across the lifespan and clinical spectrum, including experiences in community-based Obesity Medicine practices, the Pediatric Endocrinology/Obesity Clinic at UPMC Children’s Hospital, and subspecialty clinics in Sleep Medicine, Bariatric Surgery, and Psychiatry/Eating Disorders.

Didactic learning is woven throughout the year to complement clinical training. Fellows participate in an Obesity Journal Club held every other month, where current basic science and clinical literature is critically reviewed. Alternating with this is the Patient Care Conference, also held bimonthly, in which fellows present complex inpatient and outpatient cases for group discussion with faculty, fostering interactive learning and multidisciplinary problem-solving. Weekly University-wide Endocrine Conferences (Endocrinology Grand Rounds) feature faculty and nationally recognized guest speakers and are jointly attended by adult and pediatric endocrinology divisions. Fellows also participate in weekly Internal Medicine Grand Rounds, gaining a broader internal medicine perspective and considering obesity’s impact across diverse disease processes.
