Patient Care
The University of Pittsburgh and UPMC share a long-standing partnership that integrates education, research, and clinical care. Central to this shared mission is patient care, which forms the foundation for the Department of Medicine’s our educational and research programs. This commitment is reflected in exceptional patient satisfaction ratings and national recognition, with 96 of our clinicians named to Castle Connolly’s Top Doctors in 2025. Working closely with both the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC, the Department of Medicine advances innovation in medicine while training the next generation of healthcare professionals and delivering world-class, patient-centered care.
As one of the nation’s largest and most advanced integrated health systems, UPMC provides an unparalleled environment for clinical training and patient care. With more than 40 academic, community, and specialty hospitals, 800 outpatient sites, and over 5,000 employed physicians, UPMC delivers comprehensive, high-quality care across a wide spectrum of patient populations. Its renowned centers of excellence in transplantation, cancer, neurosurgery, psychiatry, rehabilitation, geriatrics, and women’s health are consistently recognized among the nation’s best by U.S. News & World Report. Reflecting this vision for the future of healthcare, the new 17-story UPMC Presbyterian Tower (scheduled for completion in 2026) will feature 636 private rooms and cutting-edge digital technology to enhance patient care, uniting world-class programs in transplant, heart and vascular, and neurological care within a single, state-of-the-art facility. Through its close affiliation with the University of Pittsburgh, UPMC integrates education, research, and innovation across all levels of training, offering learners exposure to every facet of modern medicine while maintaining a deep commitment to the communities it serves.
Complementing this partnership, the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System (VAPHS) provides exceptional, Veteran-centered care while serving as a major training site for University of Pittsburgh medical students, residents, and fellows. As Pennsylvania’s largest and most complex VA health care system, VAPHS delivers specialized care through two medical centers and five community-based outpatient clinics and leads national initiatives in health equity, geriatrics, mental health, and rehabilitation. Home to four VA Research Centers, VAPHS has pioneered advances such as organ transplant surgery, brain-controlled robotic arm technology, and lightweight wheelchair design, exemplifying innovation that improves lives across the VA network and beyond.
Together, the University of Pittsburgh, UPMC, and the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System form a powerful clinical and academic alliance that drives progress in medicine. Their shared commitment to compassionate care, education, and discovery ensures that patients benefit from the most advanced treatments available today while shaping the future of healthcare for generations to come.
