Patient Care
The Division of Geriatric Medicine is one of the nation’s largest and most distinguished programs dedicated to the care of older adults. We focus on preventing health problems, distinguishing treatable conditions from normal aging, and tailoring treatments so that benefits clearly outweigh risks. Our goal is to optimize function, preserve independence, and enhance quality of life. Because the needs of older adults are often complex, we work closely with an interdisciplinary team to ensure coordinated, holistic care. Depending on the situation, geriatricians may serve as primary care physicians or as consultants to other providers.
With nearly half of our faculty dually trained in geriatrics and another medical specialty, our faculty bring valuable expertise to the patient care of older patients, who may benefit from geriatric expertise when the best medical approach is uncertain, when current treatment plans are not working as expected, or when the complexity of their health requires added coordination and careful medication review. We also specialize in addressing geriatric syndromes such as dementia, delirium, falls, incontinence, depression, and frailty, and provide guidance on future care planning, whether at home, in a facility, or through palliative care. Above all, our faculty are deeply committed to compassionate, patient-centered care that honors the dignity and individuality of every older adult we serve.
