Supporting Palliative Care

Our clinical team is made up of physicians, advanced practice providers, pharmacy professionals, social workers, mental health professionals, music therapists and chaplains – all deeply committed to improving quality of life for patients through proven palliative care best practices. We work with patients at UPMC Presbyterian, UPMC Shadyside, UPMC Mercy, and UPMC Magee-Women’s Hospital, and at outpatient clinics throughout the region. Our research team is nationally recognized for developing palliative care best practices to improve the lives of patients and their families.

Donations to the Section of Palliative Care and Medical Ethics

Charitable gifts are an important source of funding for our program. Your contribution will help our clinicians continue to assist patients and families and to expand palliative care education for other healthcare providers.

Tara Cook MD Memorial Neurology and Palliative Care Education Fund

The Tara Cook MD Memorial Neurology and Palliative Care Education Fund was created to honor the memory of Dr. Tara Cook, a faculty member in the Section of Palliative Care who passed away in 2021.
Dr. Cook was passionate about teaching palliative medicine to neurologists. She developed the first palliative care educational program for neurology residents – NeuroTALK. We are honored to raise money to support the continuation of Dr. Cook’s heartfelt mission. Funds raised will support an annual lectureship in palliative care and neurology given by a nationally-recognized leader in neuro-palliative care.

The Alan Gleitsman Student Research Fund in Palliative Care

The Alan Gleitsman Student Research Fund in Palliative Care offers a mentored research experience in palliative care to first year medical students. Scholars are paired with a palliative care faculty research mentor and dedicate effort during the program period to their research mentor’s project or scholarly activity and research skill development.

The Palliative Research Center (PaRC)

The Palliative Research Center (PaRC) is a multidisciplinary collaborative of palliative care researchers at the University of Pittsburgh committed to improving the lives of people living with serious illness and their families. PaRC supports researchers who are building the palliative care scientific evidence base, exploring ethical dilemmas, and mentoring the next generation of palliative care research scientists.

Evelyn B. Amdur Social Work Fellowship in Palliative Care

The Evelyn B. Amdur Social Work Fellowship provides an intensive, one month internship in palliative care for MSW students at the University of Pittsburgh School of Social Work. This opportunity offers a mentored experience with a clinical rotation that enables the fellow to spend time with the palliative care teams at UPMC Shadyside and UPMC Presbyterian hospitals. The fellow will receive direct mentoring, communication, interaction, and insight in the legal and ethical aspects of the care of seriously ill patients and their families.
