Education and Training Programs

The Division’s main goal in education and training is to create a future generation of investigators and physician scientists who are well disciplined in their fields and who have a solid foundation on which to build their careers. This goal is accomplished by leading educational programs in medical school, residency and fellowship training, and career development programs.

Medical School

Division faculty members have extensive roles in all phases of the education of medical students. Faculty members hold major administrative roles, teach and direct courses, and precept and mentor students throughout their four years of medical school.

Internal Medicine Residency Program

The Division invests tremendous effort and resources into the education of its residents. The Internal Medicine Residency Training Program is recognized for maintaining a focus on core knowledge while prioritizing individualized training.

General Internal Medicine Fellowship Programs

The Division offers unique post-doctoral fellowships for physicians. Two General Internal Medicine Fellowships are offered—one designed for clinician-educators and the other for clinician-researchers—and Fellows have the additional option of following a particular area of interest or “track” (in Women’s Health, Medicine Pediatrics, or Hospital Medicine).

Hospice and Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program

The University of Pittsburgh’s Fellowship in Hospice and Palliative Medicine is a 1- to 2-year fellowship designed to train leaders, educators, or investigators in palliative medicine. Options for a master’s degree in Medical Education or Clinical Research are available.

Addiction Medicine Fellowship

The Addiction Medicine Fellowship provides fellows a rigorous and clinically intense training experience that will prepare them for a successful addiction medicine career in a variety of settings, with special opportunities available to those who are interested in academic addiction medicine.

Clinical and Translational Research Training

The objectives of the Division’s research training are to develop, nurture, and support a group of clinical and translational scientists by offering education, training, and career development programs.
