Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism Fellowship
Program Overview
Through a combination of inpatient and outpatient experiences, as well as a robust curriculum of conferences, lectures, and seminars, fellows gain the knowledge and skills to expertly evaluate and manage both common and rare endocrine disorders. In continuity clinics, fellows develop experience in the longitudinal care of patients, emphasizing disease management, preventive care, and overall wellness. Humanistic and ethical practice is a cornerstone of our training philosophy.
Fellowship Structure
Our ACGME-accredited fellowship supports a total of ten fellows across the two core training years. Fellows may choose to extend their training by an additional one or two years to pursue in-depth, mentored research. This advanced track is designed for trainees interested in academic medicine and provides the opportunity to develop investigative skills alongside clinical expertise. Preference is given to applicants committed to research training.
Clinical training is primarily concentrated within the first 12 to 18 months of the program, with all fellows completing a total of 14 months of hands-on clinical experience. Fellows in the two-year clinical track participate in a minimum of eight months of mentored research during their training, allowing them to develop foundational investigative skills alongside their clinical expertise. Those pursuing the research track extend their training to three years, spending approximately 22 of the 36 months engaged in mentored research under the guidance of experienced faculty. This pathway is designed for fellows seeking to build a career in academic medicine, combining advanced clinical training with the opportunity to conduct impactful, hypothesis-driven research.
Evaluation
Fellow performance is assessed using multiple methods, including attending and mentor evaluations, personal portfolio review, mini-clinical evaluation exercises (CEX), and the Endocrine Self-Assessment In-Training Examination. These assessments also inform ongoing evaluation of the program’s quality and effectiveness. With fellow participation, the Curriculum Committee meets semi-annually to review progress, outcomes, and opportunities for enhancement. The final meeting each academic year serves as the Annual Program Evaluation, where feedback from trainees and faculty guides continuous program improvement.
