Patient Care

Faculty and housestaff from the VA Section of General Internal Medicine, in partnership with the University of Pittsburgh Internal Medicine Residency Program, provide a full range of inpatient and outpatient services to veterans across western Pennsylvania and eastern Ohio.

The Section delivers primary care to more than 32,000 veterans through clinics located at the Oakland, Highland Drive, and H.J. Heinz (Aspinwall) divisions of the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System (VAPHS), as well as community-based outpatient clinics in Monaca, Greensburg, and Washington, Pennsylvania, and in St. Clairsville, Ohio.

Specialized services include:

  • Women’s Health Care provided through a VA National Center of Excellence based at the Oakland Division.
  • Urgent and Emergent Care through the Emergent Care Center at Oakland.
  • Substance Abuse Detection and Early Intervention programs at Oakland.
  • Medical Preoperative Evaluation for veterans with chronic medical conditions preparing for surgery.
  • Inpatient General Medicine Care for veterans admitted with acute medical illnesses at the Oakland Division.
