Section of General Internal Medicine – VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System
Based in Oakland, the Section of General Internal Medicine at the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System (VAPHS) plays a central role in providing comprehensive, high-quality care for Veterans throughout western Pennsylvania. As part of the Primary Care Service Line, the section is among the largest physician groups at VAPHS, offering both inpatient and outpatient services that range from primary care to highly specialized consultative medicine.
Nearly all section members hold faculty appointments within the University of Pittsburgh’s Division of General Internal Medicine, reflecting the close partnership between the VA and the University in advancing clinical excellence, education, and research. The section is also a hub for academic general internal medicine, housing the Center for Healthcare Evaluation, Research and Promotion (CHERP), a nationally recognized research center dedicated to improving health outcomes and health care delivery for Veterans.
In addition to its strong research mission, the section includes a large group of clinician-educators who provide didactic and case-based teaching for medical students, residents, fellows, and allied health professionals. Many faculty members also serve in leadership roles at the local, regional, and national levels within the Veterans Health Administration, shaping the future of Veteran care through their expertise and commitment to service.
