Medical Pancreatology Fellowship
Program Overview
The Medical Pancreatology Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh and UPMC Pancreas Center of Excellence offers an unparalleled opportunity to train within one of the most distinguished pancreatic programs in the nation. The Medical Pancreaticobiliary and Surgical Oncology teams are recognized internationally for their multidisciplinary, patient-centered approach, partnering closely with experts in abdominal imaging, pathology, pain medicine, behavioral services, and medical and radiation oncology to deliver comprehensive care for all forms of pancreatic and biliary diseases.
A hallmark of the program is the dedicated Medical Pancreatobiliary Inpatient Consult Service, where pancreatologists and therapeutic endoscopists work collaboratively to co-manage complex cases. Fellows gain exposure to an extensive clinical volume while benefiting from the program’s deep commitment to research, spanning epidemiology, clinical trials, genetics, translational science, and basic investigation. Faculty members lead or contribute to nearly all major national multicenter studies in pancreas medicine.
This one-year fellowship, open to physicians who have completed an ACGME-accredited Gastroenterology Fellowship, is designed for those pursuing an academic career in medical pancreatology. Training is tailored to individual career goals and includes a combination of inpatient and outpatient experiences, as well as rotations in pathology, abdominal imaging, pain management, the UPMC Gut-Brain Health Program, and the High-Risk Cancer Clinic.
Fellows participate in a rich educational environment featuring weekly pancreatobiliary case conferences, a multidisciplinary pancreas cancer conference, GI Grand Rounds, Journal Clubs, and national collaborative events such as the PB Live multi-institutional conference and the annual PancreasFest.
In addition to pursuing independent research interests, fellows collaborate on ongoing studies within the UPMC Pancreas Center of Excellence. When appropriate, the fellowship may be extended to two years to allow for further academic development and generation of preliminary data for future research initiatives.
