Academic Research Center for Hematology (ARCH)
The Academic Research Center for Hematology (ARCH) advances innovative, equity-focused research in blood health to accelerate the development of novel treatments that improve lives and strengthen communities. The ARCH clinical research team includes six dedicated staff members who oversee more than 20 clinical studies, with a primary focus on sickle cell disease and a growing portfolio in other areas of benign hematology, such as acquired platelet disorders and autoimmune hemolytic anemias. In collaboration with colleagues across the Department of Medicine, ARCH is also developing Orchestra, a hematology database designed to integrate information from multiple electronic medical records to support and expand research efforts. The team’s recent move to Oakland has fostered a more unified and efficient operation, enabling ARCH to manage all aspects of clinical research—from protocol and infrastructure development to regulatory oversight, budgeting, study coordination, patient engagement, and data safety.
