Education and Training
The Division of Geriatric Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh offers a continuum of training opportunities that prepare physicians, clinician–educators, and researchers to meet the needs of an aging population. Our programs emphasize patient-centered, evidence-based care and the integration of geriatric principles across every care setting. Trainees benefit from close mentorship, interdisciplinary collaboration, and the vast clinical and academic resources of one of the nation’s leading health systems.
Clinical education begins with dedicated geriatrics rotations for internal medicine residents and extends through our ACGME-accredited Geriatric Medicine Fellowship, which provides hands-on experience across inpatient, outpatient, long-term, and community-based care. Fellows may tailor their training through specialized options, including a combined geriatric–palliative education track and advanced academic pathways supported by the VA GRECC and NIH T32 programs. For early specialization, the four-year Internal Medicine-Geriatrics Integrated Training Program offers a seamless route to dual board eligibility while fostering leadership, scholarship, and professional development.
Research training within the division spans predoctoral to postdoctoral levels, uniting clinical, translational, and biological approaches to aging. The Pitt Integrated Clinical and Geroscience Research Training Program (T32) provides rigorous cross-disciplinary education and mentorship for future clinician–scientists, while the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System’s Advanced Geriatrics and Medication Safety Fellowships cultivate leaders dedicated to improving care for older adults and Veterans. Together, these programs advance a shared mission: to train innovative leaders who will shape the science and practice of aging for years to come.
