World-Class Clinical Care

Patient care – our core mission – is fundamental to our educational and research programs. As a Department, we provide state-of-the-art healthcare that is compassionate, comprehensive, and easily accessible to our patients at 15 hospitals and 140 clinics across Pennsylvania. With its focus on continuous quality improvement in all of the specialties provided, the Department of Medicine operates 24 unique specialty clinics with clinical providers promoting the highest level of service orientation and achieving excellence in overall patient satisfaction with our clinical programs, with 96 clinicians named to Castle Connolly’s Top Doctors in 2025.

Innovative Research

In FY2024, the University of Pittsburgh was the 6th highest recipient of NIH funding, receiving over $660 million in awarded support. The Department of Medicine secured the most NIH funding of any department at Pitt with over $195 million in funding – 9th amongst internal medicine programs nationwide.

Training the Next Generation

With support from its 9 T32/TL1 training grants and other internal/external funding mechanisms, the Department of Medicine supports the research training of 135 postdoctoral fellows. The Department of Medicine is also dedicated to assisting trainees with their transition to independence, as evidenced by the over 40 junior faculty within the Department of Medicine who currently hold career development awards from federal and foundation sources.
