The University of Pittsburgh Department of Medicine is proud to announce the launch of Enhanced Mentoring for Building AdministRative Careers (EMBARC), a premier physician leadership development program designed to prepare physicians for future leadership roles within a complex academic medical center and integrated delivery and finance system.
Building on the foundation established through Physician Leadership Essentials, led by UPMC Learning & Development (L&D), EMBARC was created by Department of Medicine leaders Ian Barbash, MD, MS; Megan Fitzpatrick, MD; and Wendy Romeo, MS, and is delivered in partnership with UPMC Learning & Development (L&D) and UPMC Talent Management & Organizational Development (TMOD).
EMBARC brings together an interdisciplinary cohort of innovative physician leaders poised to shape the future of health care through a rigorous year-long experience designed to cultivate the vision, influence, and leadership capabilities needed to advance academic medicine, accelerate innovation, and lead meaningful organizational change.

As part of the program, participants will work in interdisciplinary teams on EMBARC Leadership Strategic Initiatives, applying leadership, business, and organizational change principles to address complex opportunities and priorities facing the Department of Medicine and broader health system. Through stakeholder engagement, data analysis, and strategic problem-solving, teams will develop evidence-based recommendations and implementation strategies, culminating in an executive presentation to senior leaders at the conclusion of the program.
Through immersive learning experiences, leadership immersion and executive engagement opportunities, case-based discussions, and direct interaction with local, regional, and nationally recognized health care and academic leaders, participants will gain the strategic perspective, leadership expertise, and professional networks needed to drive innovation, inspire high-performing teams, and lead transformative change across academic medicine and integrated health systems.
