Medical Student Education

From the first day of anatomy lab to the final clerkship, the Department of Medicine is deeply woven into the fabric of medical student education at the University of Pittsburgh. Our faculty contribute nearly one-quarter of all teaching for medical students—more than any other department in the School of Medicine. Along the way, they design, lead, and continually refine some of the school’s most highly rated courses.

Leading the Curriculum

Department of Medicine faculty shape the educational experience of medical students at the University of Pittsburgh on a broad scale, including:

  • Directing three of the five major curriculum blocks and 17 of 29 total courses offered in the School of Medicine
  • Overseeing core and advanced clerkships such as:
    • Adult Inpatient Medicine
    • Combined Ambulatory Medicine & Pediatrics
    • Acting Internship in Internal Medicine
    • Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU)
  • Mentoring and precepting students throughout all four years of training
  • Guiding interdisciplinary education alongside pharmacy, nursing, and advanced practice provider students

Our faculty also hold leadership roles as Advisory DeansAssistant Dean for Scholarly Projects, and members of the curriculum and admissions committees with many recognized as part of the Academy of Distinguished Medical Educators for their outstanding contributions.

Integrating Research and Education

Education at Pitt Medicine extends well beyond the classroom and clinic. Department faculty:

  • Direct the Clinical Scientist Training Program, shaping the next generation of physician-researchers
  • Teach the majority of its clinical and translational curriculum
  • Serve as dedicated mentors for medical student research, dissertation committees, and combined MD/PhD training projects

Through this multifaceted commitment, the Department of Medicine not only prepares students to excel in their clinical skills, but also inspires them to advance medicine through scholarship, innovation, and leadership.
