Patient Care
Faculty in the Division of General Internal Medicine provide compassionate, comprehensive care for individuals living with substance use disorders through a continuum of hospital- and community-based programs. The Substance Treatment and Recovery Service (STARS) at UPMC Presbyterian and Montefiore delivers evidence-based, patient-centered addiction management for hospitalized patients, emphasizing harm reduction, motivational support, and linkage to community treatment resources. Complementing inpatient care, the UPMC General Internal Medicine Recovery Engagement Program for Opioid Addiction at UPMC Mercy offers outpatient, primary-care-based treatment for opioid and other substance use disorders. Services include medication-assisted treatment (such as buprenorphine and naltrexone), mental health counseling, wound and primary care, social work and peer support, and viral infection testing and treatment – all grounded in a holistic, nonjudgmental philosophy that meets patients where they are in their recovery journey.
To ensure continuity of care and rapid access to treatment, the UPMC Medical Toxicology Telemedicine Bridge Clinic provides same- or next-day telemedicine visits for individuals experiencing withdrawal or seeking urgent initiation of medications for substance use disorder. Together, these integrated programs reflect UPMC’s commitment to delivering compassionate, evidence-based, and accessible addiction care to help patients achieve and sustain recovery across hospital, outpatient, and virtual settings.
