Education and Training
STREAM is deeply committed to training the next generation of physicians to lead compassionate, evidence-based care for individuals with substance use disorders. The UPMC Addiction Medicine Fellowship provides intensive, multidisciplinary training that prepares fellows to manage addiction in a wide range of clinical environments: from primary care and hospital consult services to specialized perinatal and palliative care settings. Through close mentorship, diverse rotations, and an emphasis on patient-centered, equitable treatment, fellows gain the expertise and confidence to address the medical, behavioral, and social dimensions of substance use.
Fellows may further personalize their education through specialized tracks in perinatal addiction medicine, palliative care, adolescent and young adult health, medical education, or clinical research. These programs integrate hands-on clinical experience with advanced academic training, including opportunities for master’s-level coursework through the Institute for Clinical Research Education. Together, these fellowships form an educational ecosystem that fosters clinical excellence, leadership, and scholarship in addiction medicine, equipping graduates to advance recovery and improve outcomes in the communities they serve.
