Section of Treatment, Research, and Education in Addiction Medicine
About
STREAM, based within the Division of General Internal Medicine, is dedicated to improving the quality of care for individuals with substance use and substance use disorders in non-specialty settings through research, education, training, and clinical innovation. The program builds on the strong foundation of substance use research, training, and clinical care already established at the University of Pittsburgh, UPMC, and the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, fostering collaboration across these institutions to advance addiction medicine. STREAM’s research efforts focus on developing and evaluating strategies to improve care delivery for substance use disorders across diverse medical settings. Its training and professional development initiatives provide educational opportunities for learners at all stages, from students and residents to postdoctoral fellows and junior faculty, while cultivating future academic leaders in addiction research. Clinically, STREAM enhances patient care through inpatient addiction medicine consultation, screening and intervention in primary care and hospital settings, and outpatient treatment via the UPMC Center for Opioid Recovery, while continuously developing new models of care to meet evolving needs.
