Clinical Informatics Fellowship

Clinical Training

The fellowship’s clinical training provides broad, hands-on experience in clinical informatics across diverse care settings within UPMC and its affiliated systems. Fellows rotate through multiple domains to gain practical understanding of how informatics enhances clinical workflows, patient outcomes, and system efficiency.

Core Clinical Rotations

  • Ambulatory Informatics
    • Focuses on outpatient informatics systems, including clinical decision support, electronic documentation, order entry and order sets, data visualization, billing integration, and patient-facing tools such as the electronic patient portal.
  • Inpatient Informatics
    • Explores the application of informatics in hospital-based environments, including the emergency department, operating room, anesthesia, medication administration, imaging, and trauma systems.
  • Pathology Informatics
    • Provides exposure to laboratory and diagnostic data systems, specimen tracking, and digital pathology workflows. For more information about the pathology track curriculum, contact Matthew Hanna, MD. View/download program flyer here.
  • Clinical Data Analytics
  • Inpatient Pediatrics
  • Center for Clinical Research Informatics
  • Population Health (UPMC Health Plan)
  • Behavioral Health (Elective)

Independent Clinical Practice

Fellows may continue practicing in their primary specialty for up to 20% of fellowship time. Maintaining active clinical practice ensures fellows stay current with clinical workflows and firsthand EHR experiences which are essential to designing effective, clinician-friendly informatics solutions.
