Education and Training

The Division of General Internal Medicine offers a wide range of training programs designed to prepare physicians for careers in academic medicine, research, and clinical leadership. Fellows and residents benefit from rigorous training, structured mentorship, and access to the University of Pittsburgh’s extensive clinical and research resources.

Our programs have an outstanding record of success: 95% of graduates from the past decade remain in academic medicine, and 87% of graduates from the past 20 years continue in academic careers. Alumni hold leadership positions at well-respected institutions across the country, including residency and fellowship program directors, internal medicine section chiefs, department chairs and vice chairs, associate and assistant deans, and chief executive and medical officers of major healthcare systems.

These training programs cultivate a collaborative, interdisciplinary environment that equips trainees with the knowledge, skills, and mentorship necessary to become independent investigators, educators, and leaders in academic medicine.
