The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) is the leading health care system in western Pennsylvania and is the clinical hub of one of the nation’s most renowned academic medical programs. Together with the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, UPMC hospitals train more than 1,300 residents and fellows each year in 82 specialty areas.
UPMC Presbyterian/Montefiore
UPMC Presbyterian and Montefiore are two major hospitals located side by side and connected by an indoor pedestrian bridge. Together, they house 625 medical/surgical beds and 150 intensive care unit (ICU) beds, with more than 32,000 inpatient admissions annually. They are home to the world-renowned Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Institute and serve as a designated Level 1 Regional Resource Trauma Center. Fellows rotating at these hospitals will gain experience in General, Surgical, and Transplant Infectious Disease Services.
VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System (VAPHS)
Located just a short 5–10-minute walk from UPMC Presbyterian/Montefiore, the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System has 108 medical/surgical beds and serves as a large referral center for VA facilities across the region. Fellows participate in the VA General Infectious Disease service and benefit from access to downloadable videos of Medical Grand Rounds presented weekly at UPMC Presbyterian and Montefiore.
UPMC Shadyside
UPMC Shadyside is a 485-bed hospital about 10 minutes from Presbyterian and Montefiore. It is closely affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute and the Hillman Cancer Center, both nationally recognized leaders in cancer treatment and research. Fellows rotating here gain experience in treating infections among patients undergoing bone marrow transplantation.
Magee-Womens Hospital of UPMC
Magee-Womens Hospital is recognized as a National Center of Excellence in Women’s Health. With more than 8,000 births annually, it serves as a regional referral center for high-risk maternal care and houses Pennsylvania’s largest neonatal ICU, which treats more than 1,000 critically ill newborns each year. Faculty specializing in gender-specific care are closely affiliated with UPMC’s divisions of cardiology, gastroenterology, rheumatology, and oncology. In addition to obstetric and neonatal care, Magee also hosts an Orthopedic practice, providing fellows opportunities to manage bone and joint infections as well as gynecologic-related infections.
Children’s Hospital of UPMC
Children’s Hospital of UPMC is a nationally recognized leader in pediatric care, with more than 400,000 visits annually to its hospital and neighborhood locations. The hospital has consistently ranked among the top pediatric centers in the country and is highly funded by the National Institutes of Health for pediatric research. Fellows may elect to rotate here to gain specialized training in managing infectious diseases in children.
