Medical Students
The Division of Infectious Diseases provides curriculum leadership and instruction across several courses in the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Beyond coursework, students can pursue clinical and research training with ID faculty across our programs and laboratories. Opportunities are arranged by sending a CV and cover letter outlining interests to Dr. Beej Macatangay (macatangaybj@upmc.edu). ID faculty are consistently recognized for excellence in teaching and mentorship.
Medical student courses include:
- Medical Microbiology (MS-I)
- “First Look” clinical rotations in the HIV clinic and ID consult service (MS-I)
- Clinical Infectious Diseases lectures within GI, Renal, and Pulmonary blocks (MS-II)
- Clinical Pharmacology (MS-IV)
- Inpatient subspecialty rotations on ID consult services at MUH/PUH and VA (Surgical ID, General ID), with daily lectures from ID fellows and faculty (MS-III/IV)
- Outpatient HIV clinic (PACT) rotation, including daily teaching, HIV-focused lectures, and case conferences (MS-III/IV)
- Summer or research year laboratory rotations
- Scholarly projects
Medical Residents
The Division of Infectious Diseases offers robust training opportunities for medicine residents interested in exploring ID as a subspecialty. Residents can gain experience through clinical programs, research projects, or quality improvement initiatives. To learn more, send a CV and cover letter describing your interests to Dr. Beej Macatangay (macatangaybj@upmc.edu); an introductory meeting will be arranged to review available options. ID faculty have been repeatedly recognized for their commitment to outstanding teaching and mentorship.
Resident opportunities include:
- Inpatient subspecialty rotations on ID consult services at MUH/PUH and VA (Surgical ID, General ID, Transplant ID), with daily teaching by fellows and faculty
- Outpatient HIV clinic (PACT) rotation with structured teaching, lectures, and case conferences
- Clinical and laboratory research projects
- Quality improvement projects
