Support Our Work
PACCSM professionals take pride in their work—whether you or a loved one are experiencing a life-threatening condition or a chronic pulmonary or sleep disorder. Our work is built on a strong foundation of innovative research and discovery that supports the most up-to-date practices and technologies. Our dedication to translational research is matched only by our emphasis on mentoring and training the next generation of pulmonary and sleep specialists through our unique collaboration with our clinical partner, UPMC, and its residency and fellowship training programs.
Help the Division of PACCSM Make a Difference
Your philanthropic support ensures continued growth and discovery within the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine. Philanthropy lays the foundation for what we do. Our supporters are partners who help us to envision new possibilities and to improve treatment outcomes.
Areas of Greatest Need
These funds represent the programs most in need of philanthropic support. You can designate your gift to a specific program or to the General Fund.
General Fund for the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine
Unrestricted donations to the General Fund are essential because they provide the greatest flexibility of use. Your gift might be used for a research study, novel paths of discovery, training support for future pulmonary specialists or continuing professional development.
Acute Lung Injury
The Acute Lung Injury (ALI)/Adult Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) Research Program is focused on treatment of sepsis-induced lung injury. In close collaboration with the Departments of Critical Care Medicine, Surgery, Anesthesiology and Perioperative Medicine, Pathology and Environmental and Occupational Health, we seek to ultimately provide solutions for patients with the most severe forms of ALI and ARDS, including patients with long-term COVID.
Asthma and Allergy Program
The University of Pittsburgh Asthma Institute is a collaborative venture among PACCSM, UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and the Pediatric Environmental Medicine Center. The institute aims to increase scientific understanding of asthma/allergic diseases across all ages, translate findings into innovative approaches and implement approaches into the community. Institute programs span all aspects of research, including local environmental impact studies as well as the psychosocial aspects of chronic disease.
Bridging Respiratory Evaluation and Therapeutic Excellence (BREAThE) Program
BREATHe Program – Bridging Respiratory Evaluation and Therapeutic Excellence (the BREATHe Program) provides comprehensive evaluation and a personalized, multidisciplinary approach to the management of complex pulmonary/sleep problems in patients with neuromuscular disease, COP, obesity hypoventilation, and chronic respiratory failure.
COPD Research
This fund supports the work of the Emphysema COPD Research Center (ECRC). The backbone of the ECRC is its research registry, established in 1999, that is world-renowned for its contributions to the development of improved therapies for patients suffering from these conditions.
Cystic Fibrosis Research
The Cystic Fibrosis Research Center at the University of Pittsburgh includes a broad spectrum of interactive, timely and significant projects that are in line with our mission of developing improved clinical treatments for cystic fibrosis (CF). Our programs have been supported by the National Institutes of Health and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation for 20 years and continue to lead to exciting new developments in the understanding and treatment of CF.
Fellowship Training Program
Supporting fellowship training is one of the best ways to ensure the future of specialized care. A fellowship is an advanced training program for physicians who’ve completed their residencies and want to further specialize or subspecialize in a particular area of pulmonary medicine.
Lung Transplantation Research
The Transplantation Immunology program is one of the oldest and largest lung transplantation programs in the United States. The program focuses on a greater understanding of the basic biology of transplantation of the lung allograft. This multidisciplinary program incorporates surgical, immunologic and medical expertise in the care and research of patients with end-stage lung disease who undergo lung transplantation.
Simmons Center for Interstitial Lung Disease
The Dorothy P. and Richard P. Simmons Center for Interstitial Lung Disease is among the nation’s foremost centers for treatment and research of pulmonary fibrosis and related interstitial lung disease. The treatment team includes specialists in pulmonary disease, rheumatology, radiology and sleep medicine, as well as many other specialties. Current research investigations focus on the mechanisms of lung fibrosis, injury and repair, genomics and proteomics of lung fibrosis and the role of genetics in predisposition to fibrosis.
Sleep Medicine Research
The nationally recognized program works with individuals experiencing advanced cardiomyopathy, obstructive sleep apnea and hypoventilation syndromes. Led by pulmonologists specializing in sleep disorders, the interdisciplinary team includes specialists from respiratory medicine, psychiatry, otolaryngology and bariatric surgery. These researchers are also integral members of the Center for Sleep and Circadian Science, which studies the critical role that sleep and circadian rhythms play in physical, mental and cognitive health across the lifespan.
