Clinician-Investigator Pathway
Advancing patient care and scientific knowledge through dual excellence in clinical practice and research
Dual Excellence
Physician-scientists may contribute through integrated approaches where clinical insights drive research questions and research findings directly enhance patient care, OR through parallel excellence where one maintains the highest standards in both clinical practice and research, with each domain contributing to overall scientific and clinical advancement. Both approaches are valued as they represent different but equally important models of physician-scientist careers.
Collaborative Research
Outstanding research increasingly emerges from collaborative teams, multicenter studies, and interdisciplinary partnerships. We value research that advances clinical practice through team science, includes diverse populations, and translates findings to improve patient outcomes across communities.
Expected Time Allocation
Clinical & Administrative Service: Variable • Research: Variable • Teaching & Mentoring: ≥10%
As clinical duties affect research productivity patterns, one’s contributions are evaluated with consideration of one’s clinical effort, looking for evidence of how sustained excellence in both domains, whether through integrated approaches that bridge clinical and research work or through parallel contributions that advance both patient care and scientific knowledge through collaborative research approaches.
Documenting Clinical Trial and Collaborative Study Contributions (when applicable)
Candidates whose research includes clinical trials or multicenter collaborative studies are encouraged to provide specific narratives describing their contributions, including:
- Role and specific responsibilities in trial leadership (site PI, steering committee, coordinating activities)
- Contributions to study design, implementation, data analysis, or manuscript preparation
- Leadership activities in industry-sponsored, foundation-funded, or federally-funded trials
- Oversight roles such as DSMB membership or similar committee service
- Quantification of impact when serving as co-author on collaborative publications
This information enables promotion committees to accurately assess the scope and significance of collaborative research contributions for those engaged in such activities.
