Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology Fellowship Program
Research Training
Fellows also benefit from additional educational and research opportunities through the Center for Research on Health Care, a nationally recognized program in health services and outcomes research, including seminars, collaborative projects, and potential certification in clinical research.
All research fellows – whether focused on clinical or basic science – design and conduct a research project under the guidance of dedicated faculty mentors. This process includes a literature review, protocol development, data collection and analysis, presentation at regional or national meetings, and manuscript preparation for publication. By the end of the program, fellows are well-prepared to pursue early career grant funding and launch successful independent research careers.
The University of Pittsburgh offers a rich, integrated research environment spanning basic, translational, clinical, and population health research. Fellows have access to cutting-edge facilities, individualized mentorship, and career development programs such as the Physician Scientist Incubator, which supports MD trainees pursuing pre-clinical research with training in scientific, professional, and resilience skills.
Additionally, the Division of Rheumatology participates in the T32 Autoimmunity and Immunopathology Training Program (AI/IP), which provides structured coursework, research projects, mentorship, and financial support. Fellows in this program gain expertise in immune mechanisms, autoimmune disease, immune regulation and tolerance, responsible conduct of research, and essential career development and management skills.
