Nephrology Research Training

The University of Pittsburgh provides an integrated research training environment designed to prepare the next generation of physician-scientists and interdisciplinary investigators. Fellows benefit from a broad spectrum of opportunities in basic, translational, clinical, and population health research, supported by structured mentorship, individualized career development plans, and access to cutting-edge facilities and resources. Complementing these offerings, the Physician Scientist Incubator program specifically supports MD trainees pursuing pre-clinical research careers, providing comprehensive training in scientific, professional, and resilience skills, with funding from the Burroughs Wellcome Foundation, UPMC, and the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine. Together, these programs cultivate investigators equipped to advance biomedical knowledge, lead innovative studies, and translate discoveries into improved patient care.

Pittsburgh Center for Training in Kidney, Urology and Hematology (PCT-KUH) U2C/TL1

The Pittsburgh Center for Training in Kidney, Urology, and Hematology (PCT-KUH) is a U2C/TL1 program dedicated to cultivating the next generation of investigators in kidney, urologic, and benign hematologic (KUH) research. As one of only 15 KUH U2C/TL1 centers nationwide, PCT-KUH builds on the University of Pittsburgh’s long-standing success in renal and epithelial biology training and provides a rigorous, multidisciplinary research environment that integrates trainees and mentors across the University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, and the Allegheny Health Network.

The program supports predoctoral students, physicians, and PhD postdoctoral fellows, offering a highly structured and mentored research experience complemented by didactic coursework, seminars, and professional development. Trainees conduct research under the close supervision of faculty trainers and advisory committees while participating in a broad range of educational activities, including journal clubs, scientific meetings, and structured training in grant writing, scientific communication, and team science. With over 70 faculty mentors representing basic, translational, and clinical disciplines, PCT-KUH provides a uniquely collaborative setting to pursue innovative research in kidney, urology, and hematology.

Beyond research training, the program’s Professional Development and Networking Cores are designed to strengthen career readiness and build a vibrant KUH research community in the Pittsburgh region. Trainees benefit from workshops, mentorship training, and structured networking opportunities that connect them with peers, mentors, and alumni across disciplines and institutions. Together, these efforts aim to inspire diverse trainees to pursue biomedical research careers and to ensure a sustained and dynamic workforce advancing discovery in kidney, urologic, and hematologic diseases.
