Combined Nephrology-Critical Care Medicine Fellowship Program

Welcome from the Program Directors

We are pleased to introduce the Combined Nephrology-Critical Care Medicine (CCM) Fellowship, a collaborative three-year training program offered by the Renal-Electrolyte Division and the Department of Critical Care Medicine. This innovative program reflects a growing national trend toward dual training that equips physicians to provide integrated, specialized care for critically ill patients with complex kidney and systemic conditions.

More than half of all patients admitted to intensive care units experience acute kidney injury, electrolyte and acid-base disturbances, or fluid overload. Physicians trained in both nephrology and critical care medicine are uniquely positioned to diagnose and manage these conditions with precision, improving outcomes for some of the sickest patients in the hospital.

Graduates of the Combined Nephrology-CCM Fellowship will be fully trained and board-eligible in both disciplines. They will possess the expertise to manage the full spectrum of kidney diseases, including chronic kidney disease, glomerular and vascular disorders, tubular and interstitial diseases, hypertension, nephrolithiasis, mineral and bone disorders, and kidney replacement therapies such as hemodialysis, continuous kidney replacement therapies, peritoneal dialysis, and kidney transplantation. They will also have advanced knowledge and procedural skills to provide comprehensive care to critically ill and injured patients, lead interprofessional ICU teams, and contribute to system-level innovations in patient care and safety.

This combined program prepares physicians to become academic leaders, clinician-scientists, and educators who bridge the fields of nephrology and critical care. Through immersive clinical experiences, mentorship, and scholarly work, fellows graduate with the skills, perspective, and leadership needed to advance the science and practice of care for critically ill patients with kidney disease.

Program Overview

Dual training in Nephrology-CCM is 3 years in length and requires a minimum of 20 months of clinical training and 10 months of scholarly activity. A fourth year of training would be available pending funding for those fellows interested in a scientist/research career path. Upon completion of the 2 years of Nephrology fellowship training, the fellow will be eligible for board certification in Nephrology, and after completion of their CCM training, fellows will be eligible for board certification in CCM. The Nephrology-CCM fellow will share didactics, journal clubs and other formalized learning opportunities with the fellows in both the Nephrology and CCM fellowship programs.
