Gastroenterology Fellowship Training Program

How to Apply

The Gastroenterology Fellowship Training Program at the University of Pittsburgh is a rigorous and highly selective program designed to prepare outstanding physicians for academic and clinical careers in gastroenterology and hepatology.

Prospective applicants are encouraged to carefully review their qualifications before applying to a competitive fellowship such as ours. Successful candidates typically demonstrate:

  • Excellence in clinical training, with particular strength and achievement during residency.
  • Strong academic interests, ideally supported by prior research experience in basic, clinical, or epidemiological investigation. Educational research experience is also valued.
  • Exceptional letters of recommendation, including at least one written by a gastroenterologist or hepatologist.
  • Evidence of commitment to scholarly and professional growth, reflected by achievements comparable to those of current and recent fellows.

Before applying, we encourage prospective fellows to review the profiles and research interests of our current trainees to better understand the depth and range of experience represented in our program.

Application Process

The UPMC Gastroenterology Fellowship accepts applications exclusively through the Association of American Medical Colleges’ ERAS Fellowships online system.

International Medical Graduates

University of Pittsburgh fellowship programs sponsor international medical graduates on H1B Visas and J-1 clinical visas through the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG).

Interview Process

Our program receives more than 500 applications each year, and interview invitations are extended to a select group of highly qualified applicants. If invited, candidates will receive detailed information about the interview day and schedule.

The Match

Our program participates in The Match through the NRMP’s Medical Subspecialties Matching Program (MSMP). Match registration dates, rank order submission deadlines for both programs and applicants, and rank order certification by programs will be determined and posted when available.
