Gastroenterology Fellowship Training Program
The Gastroenterology Fellowship Program at the University of Pittsburgh offers a rigorous, highly selective training experience designed to prepare the next generation of leaders in academic and clinical gastroenterology. Combining exceptional clinical training with innovative research and individualized mentorship, the program provides fellows with the skills, knowledge, and scholarly foundation to excel in all areas of digestive disease medicine.
Accredited by the ACGME with commendations and no citations, the fellowship features a structured yet flexible curriculum that allows each trainee to tailor their experience to align with personal career goals, whether it be a career as a clinician, a physician scientist, or a clinical educator. Fellows complete 18 months of intensive clinical training and an additional 18 months of individualized training focused on research, advanced clinical specialization, or educational development. This flexible model supports career paths in clinical investigation, basic and translational science, or medical education, with opportunities to train alongside internationally recognized faculty across the Division’s Centers of Excellence, including those in liver disease, inflammatory bowel disease, pancreas and biliary disorders, motility, women’s digestive health, intestinal nutrition, and gastrointestinal cancer prevention.
Fellows begin their training immersed in clinical practice, gaining expertise in a wide range of gastrointestinal disorders under the guidance of expert clinicians and mentors. Within the first six months, fellows meet with program leadership to define long-term career goals and develop an individualized plan for the remaining years of training. Advanced fellows have access to fourth-year specialty fellowships in inflammatory bowel disease, therapeutic endoscopy, transplant hepatology, and medical pancreatology, further expanding opportunities for focused expertise.
With more than 40 distinguished clinical and research faculty, world-class facilities, and a strong record of academic excellence, the University of Pittsburgh’s Gastroenterology Fellowship offers an unparalleled environment for clinical mastery, scientific discovery, and professional growth.
