Education

The University of Pittsburgh Gastroenterology Fellowship Program offers comprehensive clinical and research training to prepare fellows for careers in academic medicine, advanced clinical practice, and investigative research. Accredited by the ACGME with the maximum cycle and commendations, the program includes 18 months of core clinical training plus 18 months tailored to each fellow’s interests, allowing focus on specialized clinical care, research, or education. Fellows receive individualized mentorship and are encouraged to define long-term career goals early, whether as clinical investigators, physician-scientists, or clinical educators.

Advanced, one-year clinical fellowships provide further specialization. The Transplant Hepatology Fellowship offers extensive experience in managing complex liver disease, liver transplantation, and living donor programs. The Inflammatory Bowel Disease Fellowship trains fellows in Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis care within a multi-disciplinary clinical and research environment. The Therapeutic Endoscopy Fellowship focuses on ERCP, EUS, and advanced endoscopic procedures, including POEM. Each program is designed to support academic career development and tailored learning goals.

Fellows pursuing research careers can join EMERGE (Enhancing MEntoring to improve Research in GastroEnterology), which provides structured mentorship, protected research time, specialized coursework, and support from study design through manuscript preparation, preparing the next generation of academic gastroenterologists.
