Medical Student Training
Faculty in the Division play integral roles in every stage of medical student education—from the first classroom experience to advanced clinical training. Division members hold key administrative positions, direct courses, and serve as preceptors and mentors throughout all four years of medical school. Many of our clinician-educator faculty are members of the Academy of Master Educators, a distinction that recognizes sustained excellence in teaching and mentorship.
The Division leads several core components of the medical school curriculum, including the Adult Inpatient Medicine Clerkship (AIMC), the Adult Outpatient Medicine Clerkship (AOMC), the Pediatrics Clerkship (PC), and the Internal Medicine Acting Internship.
- The Adult Inpatient Medicine Clerkship (AIMC) is an eight-week inpatient rotation – the longest and one of the most formative experiences in the curriculum – providing an immersive introduction to inpatient internal medicine.
- The Adult Outpatient Medicine Clerkship (AOMC) is a four-week outpatient rotation that introduces students to ambulatory internal medicine and includes a weekly longitudinal experience in outpatient psychiatry. The course emphasizes evidence-based medicine, trauma-informed care, women’s health, geriatrics, wellness and prevention, and effective patient communication. Students work in diverse clinical settings throughout the region, including both hospital- and community-based practices.
- The Pediatrics Clerkship (PC) offers a unique eight-week ambulatory experience that integrates four weeks each in medicine and pediatrics.
- The Internal Medicine Acting Internship provides fourth-year students with the opportunity to function as interns on Internal Medicine wards, bridging the transition to residency.
Division faculty also direct and serve on the advisory board for the Clinical Scientist Training Program (CSTP), which offers clinical research training and scholarships to medical students pursuing careers in clinical investigation.
