Nephrology Fellowship Training Program
Program Overview
The UPMC Nephrology Fellowship Training Program is dedicated to preparing the next generation of nephrologists for successful, fulfilling careers in academic medicine, research, and clinical practice. With training that spans four major hospitals, fellows gain exposure to a broad and diverse patient population while learning from supportive and internationally recognized faculty. The program combines rigorous clinical training, abundant research opportunities, and strong mentorship within a collegial and collaborative environment. In addition to extensive in-person learning, fellows also gain experience in telehealth through video visits and electronic consultations.
The two-year structured curriculum provides a balance of clinical experience, scholarly activity, and individualized professional development. First-year fellows complete 11 months of clinical rotations focused on building core nephrology competencies, while the second year allows for flexibility through protected research time or advanced clinical training in areas such as kidney transplantation, onconephrology, or medical education. Fellows participate in a weekly continuity clinic throughout both years and may pursue an additional third year of research training supported by grant funding. A robust didactic curriculum, including Renal Grand Rounds, Journal Club, Biopsy Conference, and a Research Seminar Series, supplements clinical experience, and trainees are encouraged to take part in interdisciplinary research conferences across the University of Pittsburgh.
Work-Life Balance and Physician Wellness
The fellowship strongly emphasizes work-life balance and physician wellness, supported by structured policies such as a note-writing cap for first-year fellows, night float system, frequent weekends off, and a robust jeopardy coverage system for personal or family emergencies. Regular wellness sessions address fatigue, burnout prevention, and self-care. Fellows enjoy numerous social gatherings throughout the year that strengthen camaraderie within the Division. Additional program benefits include a competitive salary, comprehensive health insurance, generous vacation and professional development allowances, conference leave, and the Michael F. Michaelis Scholar grant for research support in the second year.
