Education and Training

The Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine (PACCSM) at the University of Pittsburgh offers exceptional clinical training and innovative research education designed to prepare future leaders in the field. Our Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine Fellowship combines diverse clinical exposure with tailored training pathways and robust research opportunities in state-of-the-art facilities. The Division is also home to one of the nation’s pioneering sleep medicine programs, which provides intensive, faculty-rich training through its ACGME-accredited one-year fellowship. Together, these programs reflect PACCSM’s commitment to advancing patient care through cutting-edge clinical practice and discovery.

Outside of clinical training, the Division has also led the NIH-funded T32 Translational Training Program in Pulmonary Biology and Medicine for more than 35 years. A structured, milestone-driven research program for physician-scientists and PhD trainees, the T32 program equips fellows with the skills to address complex questions in lung biology and disease through individualized mentorship, cross-disciplinary collaborations, and access to extensive clinical and laboratory resources. Training emphasizes emerging technologies, computational approaches, and cross-cutting themes such as aging, immunology, and the microbiome, ensuring graduates are prepared to shape the future of pulmonary research and academic medicine. Together, these programs reflect PACCSM’s mission to train outstanding clinicians and scientists whose work will transform the future of lung health and patient care.
