Fundamentals of Bench Research Course

Open to all clinical fellows and physician–scientists at the instructor level at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and institutions nationwide, the Fundamentals of Bench Research Course is designed as an intensive two-week learning experience. Featuring lectures delivered by University of Pittsburgh faculty with expertise in basic and translational research, highlighting a wide range of investigative techniques, the course introduces fellows, physician-scientists, and scientists-in-training to the core principles of basic and translational investigation as they relate to human disease. The curriculum progresses logically from molecular and cellular foundations to organ-level and clinical applications, emphasizing key concepts, innovative methodologies, novel technologies, and a strong problem-solving approach. Participants also gain hands-on experience through laboratory sessions that apply these principles using a “learning by doing” model.
Recognized for its impact in shaping successful physician-scientists, the annual program and has become a required component of the T1 Translational Track within the Master of Science in Clinical Research program offered by the University of Pittsburgh Institute for Clinical Research Education. Morning presentations are delivered virtually, while afternoons feature in-person, hands-on laboratory training. The 2025 course schedule is available here.

- Attendance at all lectures is required to participate in laboratory training.
- Due to the intensive two-week commitment, registration must be approved by each participant’s Division Chief or Department Chair.
