About the Division of PACCSM
The Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, Critical Care, and Sleep Medicine stands among the nation’s leading clinical pulmonary programs and is a world leader in the art and science of pulmonary, allergy, and sleep medicine, providing exceptional patient care and pioneering transformative treatments for respiratory disease. The Division is dedicated to patient-centered discovery in the laboratory and in the clinic, fostering a collaborative environment among PhD scientists, physician-scientists, and clinicians. In recognition of the Division’s expertise in the evidence-based care of patients with lung and allergic disease, sleep disorders, and critical illness, numerous PACCSM Division faculty members are listed in The Best Doctors in America.
The PACCSM Division is devoted to its core missions of clinical and academic excellence, as well as the training of the next generation of leaders in science and medicine, with a strong focus on early career development and mentoring. The Division provides care for patients within the UPMC Health System and the Veterans Administration Pittsburgh Healthcare System. One of the largest clinical and grant-funded divisions in the Department of Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh, the PACCSM Division combines the very best in clinical training with innovative and structured research training across the translational research spectrum, supported by a prestigious National Institutes of Health T32 training grant.
Nationally recognized for its clinical, translational, and basic research programs, members of the PACCSM Division and colleagues at the University of Pittsburgh have developed productive collaborations and a dynamic research enterprise with foci including lung injury, infection and inflammation, microbiome, lung transplant, pulmonary fibrosis, aging and regenerative medicine, and asthma.
Division faculty provide the highest quality, compassionate care for patients with lung disease, led by a formidable team of physicians repeatedly recognized for their dedication. The Division’s life-saving Lung Transplant Program, in collaboration with transplant surgery, continues to lead the field in transplantation by offering transplants to high-risk patients—up to 30% of whom receive a successful transplant at UPMC after being declined elsewhere. PACCSM supports several local hospitals and clinics across western Pennsylvania, including UPMC Montefiore and UPMC Presbyterian Shadyside hospitals, the UPMC Comprehensive Lung Center (CLC), the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, UPMC Magee-Womens Hospital, UPMC Mercy, UPMC East, UPMC Somerset, UPMC Horizon, and UPMC Jameson, as well as bronchoscopy labs and sleep labs.
With a legacy of innovation, a commitment to compassionate care, and a vision for discovery that shapes the future of medicine, the PACCSM Division continues to advance health, transform lives, and train the leaders who will define tomorrow’s standards in pulmonary, allergy, critical care, and sleep medicine.
