Clinical Training

The Cardiovascular Medicine Fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh provides comprehensive, high-caliber clinical training designed to produce master clinicians and future leaders in cardiovascular medicine. Fellows gain broad exposure to a large and diverse patient population across multiple clinical settings and benefit from intensive mentorship by experienced and dedicated clinician educators.

Through a combination of multidisciplinary inpatient care and longitudinal outpatient experiences at both the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) and the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System, fellows develop the clinical judgment, procedural expertise, and professionalism required to excel in academic or clinical practice.

In addition to superb clinical exposure, the program integrates mentored research and academic development, equipping fellows with the tools to pursue careers in academic medicine. Trainees engage directly with nationally recognized research programs in basic, translational, and clinical science across a wide range of focus areas, including:

  • Electrophysiology (advanced mapping and ablation, novel pacemakers and defibrillators, machine learning, translational genetics)

Training Sites

The University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) is the leading health care system in western Pennsylvania and is the clinical hub of one of the nation’s most renowned academic medical programs. Together with the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, UPMC hospitals train more than 1,300 residents and fellows each year in 82 specialty areas.

UPMC Presbyterian/Montefiore

UPMC Presbyterian is the flagship hospital of the UPMC health system and a major academic and research hub located in Pittsburgh’s Oakland neighborhood. UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh (CHP)

UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh (CHP) is a nationally recognized leader in pediatric care and the region’s only hospital exclusively dedicated to infants, children, teens, and young adults. Affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, CHP offers state-of-the-art facilities, including a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center, and a full spectrum of subspecialty services. Its innovative John G.
