The Division of Cardiology combines these strengths, earning recognition as an international leader in cardiovascular medicine.

With more than 70 physicians and scientists across Western Pennsylvania, the Division combines outstanding community-based care with the most advanced technology and treatments available through UPMC’s Heart and Vascular Institute (HVI). UPMC cardiologists perform approximately 20,000 catheterization procedures and 6,500 electrophysiology procedures each year. Cardiology faculty also oversee a robust training program, graduating 10 general cardiology fellows annually through a three-year program, along with subspecialty fellowships in Interventional Cardiology, Congestive Heart Failure/Transplantation, and Electrophysiology. Specialized research fellowships in molecular biology, molecular imaging, and clinical epidemiology prepare trainees for academic and investigative careers.

Research funding for the Division exceeds $10 million annually, supporting studies in gene therapy, advanced cardiac imaging, and the epidemiology of heart disease in women. Division researchers are advancing the field through new technologies and treatments while maintaining a strong record of securing federal, industry, and foundation funding. Major research strengths include translational genetics, heart failure, sudden cardiac death, molecular imaging, and outcomes research, complemented by faculty collaborations through the Vascular Medicine Institute. In addition, the Division leads numerous clinical trials, including sponsor-initiated drug studies and investigational device exemption (IDE) trials.
