Predoctoral Training

The Division of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology is committed to training the next generation of scientists and clinicians through a range of undergraduate and predoctoral programs. Trainees gain exposure to cutting-edge research, rigorous clinical science, and mentorship from internationally recognized faculty. Whether through hands-on summer research experiences, interdisciplinary graduate training, or specialized PhD programs, students acquire the knowledge, technical skills, and professional development necessary to pursue careers in academic medicine, biomedical research, and clinical investigation.

Interdisciplinary Biomedical Graduate Program (IBGP)

The Interdisciplinary Biomedical Graduate Program (IBGP) at the University of Pittsburgh provides a rigorous foundation in modern cell and molecular biology while allowing students to explore diverse research approaches. After completing laboratory rotations and first-year coursework, students select a research mentor and transition into one of six participating PhD-granting programs. The program is designed to foster flexibility and choice, providing a robust environment for students pursuing a PhD.

To enter the Immunology (IMM) Graduate Program, IBGP students must successfully complete the first-year curriculum and identify a laboratory mentor. Students in the Medical Scientist Training Program (MSTP) can matriculate into the IMM Graduate Program after completing two years of medical school and selecting a mentor. Admission to the program typically begins on September 1, following approval by the Graduate Program Director and the Associate Dean of Graduate Studies. Faculty from the Division of Rheumatology and Clinical Immunology actively participate in this program.

Graduate students are expected to attend the weekly Student/Postdoc Research in Progress Seminar, where trainees, faculty, and guest speakers present current research. After passing the comprehensive examination, each student presents their research progress annually. Students also have the opportunity to meet visiting speakers from the Department of Immunology Seminar Series during special breakfast sessions, fostering mentorship, networking, and potential post-doctoral collaborations. Attendance at all weekly seminars is mandatory.

Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP)

The Summer Undergraduate Research Program (SURP) provides undergraduate students with hands-on research experience under the guidance of internationally recognized faculty. The program is designed for students considering graduate education and aims to immerse them in a professional research environment.

Under the mentorship of a faculty member, students participate in ongoing laboratory research projects over a ten-week period, gaining practical laboratory skills and a deeper understanding of the scientific process. Participants also engage in weekly journal clubs, seminar series, and lab meetings, and have the opportunity to present their research results at the conclusion of the program.

SURP is open to students entering their sophomore or junior year. Applicants must submit a personal statement outlining research interests and career goals, an unofficial transcript, and two letters of recommendation from faculty familiar with the student’s academic performance. The application deadline is March 1. Students receive a stipend for the ten-week program (June through early August) but are responsible for travel and housing expenses in Pittsburgh.
