Sharon Riddler, MD, has received UPMC’s Excellence in Patient Experience Award. Her patients have rated Sharon as a Top UPMC Provider by Specialty in the Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems Clinician and Group Survey (CG-CAHPS). The survey assesses patients’ experiences with health care providers and staff in doctors’ offices. The CAHPS program is a multi-year initiative of the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ). Its purpose is to support investigator-led research to better understand patient experience with health care.

Sharon was rated in the specialty area of Infectious Diseases. Of more than 5,000 physicians within UPMC, she is one of only 48 award recipients of this award across UPMC’s specialties.

Sharon has been a member of the ID Division for the past 29 years and has devoted her work to developing and conducting scientifically rigorous clinical and translational research trials to investigate viral and immune pathogenesis of HIV-1 infection and its complications, and to evaluate novel drugs and strategies for treating HIV-1 infection. Sharon provides primary and specialty care for patients with HIV infection. Her work on behalf of patients with HIV-1 infection has made a huge impact locally and internationally in the lives of many patients with HIV-1 infection and their families.

Sharon cares for hundreds of patients in the UPMC HIV-AIDS program. She has been tireless in her commitment to providing the best care possible for a complex patient population and to ensuring that the next generation of physicians will be well-trained to care for them. Sharon’s achievements have greatly enhanced the research, educational and clinical care missions of the ID Division and the Department of Medicine. She epitomizes the dedicated, compassionate and selfless physician that differentiates UPMC from other health systems.
