Renal-Electrolyte Fellowship Program

Work-Life Balance

Our call schedule is detailed below and there are 4 things we wish to highlight about it since we have a strong belief in work-life balance and advancing physician wellness:

  1. First year fellows have a cap of writing 15 notes per day between the months of July and December. Between January and June, the cap changes to a maximum of 20 notes per day. Any clinical encounters above these caps are performed by the attending physician.
  2. All fellows, including first years, typically have 2 or 3 weekends off every month.
  3. For weekend calls, first year fellows do not see established patients. Established patients’ evaluation and clinical documentation are completed by an attending physician.
  4. We have a robust jeopardy system that is not used only for emergencies. It is activated if a fellow has a busy overnight call.

Jeopardy System

Designed to mitigate fatigue and burnout, this system allows first year fellows who had a busy call and did not get enough sleep (< 4 consecutive hours), or feel tired, to go home no later than 12 pm post call and be covered by a 2nd year fellow.

Wellness Training

Didactic sessions are held throughout the year to prepare fellows to:

  • Recognize and mitigate Fatigue
  • Recognize and prevent Burnout
  • Promote Work-life balance

The program sponsor a number of social activities during the year including 4th of July Program Director’s party, Renal-Electrolyte Division Official New Fellows’ Welcome party, December holiday party for fellows and faculty hosted by our division chief, Monthly lunch with the program directors, and an array of other gatherings at different spots in Pittsburgh.
