Curriculum

The fellowship is designed as a 12 months longitudinal experience with core general sleep rotations held at Veterans Affairs Pittsburgh Healthcare System (VAPHS) University Drive Campus, University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) Comprehensive Lung Center (CLC). Specialty rotations in Sleep Pediatrics and ENT are held at and UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh (CHP) and University of Pittsburgh Mercy Hospital, respectively.

Clinical exposure through general and pediatric sleep clinics at these sites encompass all aspects of Sleep Medicine to include sleep disordered breathing, insomnia, hypersomnia, parasomnia, circadian rhythm disorders, sleep related movement disorders, surgical approaches to sleep disorders, and interactions between sleep disorders with medical and psychiatry comorbidities.

Additional activities include supervised adult and pediatric sleep study interpretation with faculty at core sites, training in technical aspects and scoring of sleep studies, inpatient sleep consultation at VAPHS, and sleep research.

We fully encourage fellows to customize and enhance their training with elective rotations that includes behavioral sleep medicine (there is strong collaboration with faculty within Departments of Psychiatry and Psychology), sleep surgery (we serve as one of the main study sites for upper-airway stimulation trials, STAR Trial Group), Obesity, and sleep dentistry available through affiliate sites at UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital (WPH), UPMC Mercy, and community based dental practices respectively.
