Presbyterian-Montefiore Hospital is a large tertiary/quaternary hospital with over 1600 beds. First year fellows will have 3-4 months in the 32-bed medical ICU where they will care for a wide variety of acute and chronic critical illness. First year fellows will have 1-2 months on the pulmonary consult service where they will care for both simple and complex pulmonary disease with the primary teams. First year fellows will round on the advanced lung disease and transplant services where they will learn to care for these specialized patient populations including management of immunosuppression and complex pulmonary diseases such as interstitial lung disease. Second year fellows will have a month in the cardiothoracic ICU where they will care for CT surgery and ECMO patients and a month in the bronchoscopy suite where they will perform bronchoscopies with transbronchial biopsies using both conscious sedation and general anesthesia. Second year fellows will also have experiences in two non-medical ICUs of their choosing including trauma and neurologic ICUs.

 Shadyside Hospital – Medical ICU

Shadyside is a tertiary referral center focused primarily on caring for patients with hematology and oncology conditions. This is an opportunity to care for a specialized and rewarding patient population. Fellows will round in the medical ICU first and second year. Third year fellows have the opportunity to round in the surgical ICUs on an elective basis where they will serve a junior attending role.

VA Pittsburgh – Medical ICU, pulmonary consults, general pulmonary clinic

The Pittsburgh VA is a tertiary referral center that serves as a hub for 5 surrounding VA hospital facilities. During this rotation, first year fellows will round in the intensive care unit, provide pulmonary consultations, and interpret pulmonary function tests. Fellows will also perform advanced bronchoscopy procedures at the VA as part of the interventional pulmonary elective and the multidisciplinary lung cancer elective.

Comprehensive Lung Center

The CLC serves 15,000 patients each year providing outpatient care for patients with a wide range of lung disease, including asthma, COPD, pulmonary hypertension, sleep disordered breathing, pulmonary hypertension, cystic fibrosis, transplant, and interstitial lung diseases. First year fellows will have one general pulmonary clinic. Second- and third-year fellows will choose from experiences in the subspecialty pulmonary clinics.

Select Specialty Hospital

Select is a long-term acute care hospital attached to Montefiore Hospital where you will care for patients with chronic respiratory failure requiring tracheostomy care and ventilator management. Many of these patients are survivors of critical illness. Rotations in Select are available to second- and third-year fellows on an elective basis.

East Hospital in Monroeville

East is a community hospital located in Monroeville, about 30 minutes east of the city. The intensive care unit is a mixed medical-surgical unit. Rotations in the East ICU are available to second- and third-year fellows on an elective basis where they will serve a junior attending role.

Mercy Hospital

The Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh was established in 1847 by the Sisters of Mercy as the first hospital in Pittsburgh and the first Mercy Hospital in the world. It merged with UPMC in 2008. We provide pulmonary consult services for this hospital with opportunities to see basic and complex pulmonary pathophysiology and to care for an underserved portion of Pittsburgh’s population. Mercy also hosts the only thoracic surgery-pulmonary conference in the UPMC system. This conference provides an excellent array of interesting cases and opportunity for collaboration with thoracic surgery.
