Dr. Kathleen Lindell’s Research

Dr. Lindell’s program of research is directed toward improving the quality of life for patients with advanced lung disease, specifically Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF) and their family caregivers. This research focus developed from experience working to improve support available to patients with IPF and their caregivers, assuring patients and caregivers are aware of the most recent education available to improve their knowledge, and engaging in advocacy efforts to increase awareness of this disease. Currently she is involved in research efforts to improve palliative care preparedness of patients with life-limiting illness and their family caregivers.

The University of Pittsburgh Dorothy P. and Richard P. Simmons Center for Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD) at UPMC, under the work of Dr. Kathleen Lindell, has created a palliative care intervention entitled A Program of SUPPORT ™ (Symptom management, Understanding of disease, Pulmonary rehabilitation, Palliative care, Oxygen therapy, Research participation, and Transplantation). This nurse-led intervention is designed to increase patients’ knowledge of the disease, teach self-management strategies, facilitate preparedness with advance care planning, and provide support to caregivers. A Program of SUPPORT ™ is available across multiple domains (face-to-face, printed material, digital (tablet) as an evidence-based program to improve both the patient and the caregiver’s knowledge of ILD. This program has been studied in patients with pulmonary fibrosis and is funded to be studied in other advanced lung diseases, including Advanced COPD. Contact the Innovation Institute at the University of Pittsburgh, 412-383-7670, for licensing information on the program.
