Karin E. Byers, MD, MS, Associate Chief of Clinical Care, has been promoted to the rank of Professor of Medicine, retroactive to December 1, 2021. Dr. Byers joined the Division of Infectious Diseases in 2001 as the Director of Surgical Infections Unit and was appointed Clinical Director of the ID Division in 2003. She was promoted to the rank of Associate Professor of Medicine in 2016. Dr. Byers was appointed Associate Chief of Clinical Care for the ID Division in 2019. She holds a secondary appointment in the Department of Neurosurgical Surgery in the School of Medicine.

Karin has been a member of the ID Division for the past 20 years and is an exceptional clinician and a highly effective manager of the clinical services for the Division. She is responsible for oversight of services at three different hospitals and scheduling for nine different services. Additionally, she is responsible for hiring and orientation of new physicians as well as faculty evaluations for the in-person clinicians. Karin is dedicated to her patients and to providing high quality care by herself and all physicians in the ID Division.

Karin cares for hundreds of UPMC patients. She has been tireless in her commitment to providing the best care possible for a complex patient population and to ensuring that the next generation of physicians will be well trained to care for them. Karin’s achievements have greatly enhanced the clinical care, educational and research missions of the ID Division and the Department of Medicine. We are privileged to have her in the ID Division as a role model of a dedicated, compassionate, and selfless physician.
