We are pleased to announce the appointment of Jana Jacobs, PhD, to the rank of Research Assistant Professor of Medicine. Jana was awarded a PhD in Infectious Diseases and Microbiology in 2014 from the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health. Following graduation, she joined the Special Pathogens Laboratory in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, as  a Senior Laboratory Analyst for two years. Jana joined the University of Pittsburgh, Department of Medicine, Division of Infectious Diseases in 2016 at the rank of Research Instructor of Medicine in 2016.

Jana has become independent in her laboratory work and has taken on a leadership role for the molecular diagnostics team. Her research interest focuses on the characterization and eradication of the HIV reservoir. She concentrates on development and optimization of highly sensitive assays for evaluation of the HIV reservoir in human clinical samples.

Jana serves as Co-Investigator for the Pittsburgh Virology Support Laboratory (VSL) funded through the AIDS Clinical Trials Group (ACTG) and previously for the RAVEN consortium organized by the Vitalant Research Institute and funded by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to establish performance characteristics of candidate ultrasensitive HIV detection/quantitation assays for HIV cure research. Her knowledge and technical abilities have brought new expertise that has strengthened the ID Division’s science.
